The Al-Amal Orphanage in Gaza is attempting to support these children despite limited resources. The orphanage is dealing with an overwhelming situation, with reports indicating that more than 30,000 children in Gaza have lost their families, including 4,700 who have no surviving parents.

The psychological impact on these children is profound. Many are exhibiting signs of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. They struggle to comprehend their loss and the uncertainties of their future. The effects of trauma manifest in numerous ways, including introversion, emotional indifference, and in some instances, hostile behavior.

Nine-year-old Rimas is one of many who has suffered devastating losses. After surviving an Israeli airstrike targeting her home, she lost her entire immediate family, only her aunt survives. Rimas sustained injuries and was unconscious for days, emphasizing the health challenges that accompany her emotional scars. Health facilities are critically damaged, with over 80% of them destroyed or impaired, leaving the injured without proper medical care.

This crisis highlights the severity of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where nearly two million people are displaced. Children are particularly vulnerable in this chaos, often finding themselves without guardians. As ceasefire uncertainties loom, the fear persists that the situation could deteriorate further, impacting Gaza's next generation.



Gaza’s orphaned children face trauma and injuries

These children have seen their homes destroyed and their parents killed. Al-Amal Orphanage in Gaza, with very few resources left after Israeli bombardments, is trying to help them hold on to life. The war has left behind a large number of orphaned children. As statistics suggest, more than 30,000 boy and girl orphans, among them 4,700 children who had lost both parents. They were the only survivors of their families. Now, after witnessing violence, losing family members or enduring replacement, many need urgent mental support for depression and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. All children in Gaza are suffering greatly, and their suffering is very likely to develop into ailments and disorders. This includes post-traumatic hostile behavior or violence. Many suffer introversion or emotional apathy. Most of those children are incapable of expressing their feelings. They cannot comprehend their surrounding events or their unknown future. Nine-year-old Rimas lost her parents, sister and two brothers when an Israeli airstrike targeted her home in Al Zaytoun neighborhood in southern Gaza. Her aunt is now the only relative that she has. She was taking shelter with her family in their grandfather's home. It was hit by the first missile, where she suffered burns and injuries. The second missile claimed the lives of all her family members. She remained unconscious for six days under the debris. She miraculously survived, the only one left of her entire family. Israeli attacks have destroyed or heavily damaged more than 80% of health facilities in Gaza, leaving injured or sick children without care. Many orphan children now suffer from blast injuries, amputations or disabilities requiring long-term rehabilitation. Nearly 1.9 million people in Gaza are displaced, half of them children. Families fleeing Israeli bombardments often became separated in the chaos, leaving children stranded or in damaged shelters without guardians. They are a traumatized generation stripped of safety.
