In the midst of a five-month long blockade and a deliberate man-made famine, Israel has allowed a limited number of commercial items to enter the Gaza Strip. But these items are non-essential supplies which lack nutritional value.

Gaza's markets are struggling to provide essential food supplies as a result of a prolonged Israeli blockade, which has restricted the entry of critical goods into the region. While some commercial items have recently been allowed in, these are largely non-essential products such as sugary snacks and processed foods, offering little nutritional value for residents facing famine conditions.

Reports from within Gaza indicate acute malnutrition, especially among children, with over 280 deaths attributed to this crisis—more than half of them children. Fresh produce, proteins, and other vital food items remain scarce and unaffordable for most, exacerbating the humanitarian situation. Local vendors and residents describe the limited aid as insufficient, highlighting the ongoing struggle for access to basic nutrition.

Well, around this corner is one of Gaza's market streets where products from the few commercial trucks are being sold here. In a little bit, we're going to go inside the market and see what's available. But before that, let's just give you a bit of a context of what's going on. For the past five months, the Israeli military imposed a total siege on the crossings, preventing the entry of much-needed supplies and life-saving items into the Gaza Strip, depriving hundreds of thousands of people from proper access to food supplies. Just in the past few weeks, it granted a few of the traders and the business owners permission to bring in some commercial aid. But for a lot of people here, these supplies coming in, the commercial items, it's not what they expected when they live through famine. These market stalls are filled with non-life-sustaining items, Nutella and noodles and some of the sugary stuff that are not necessarily important for survival here in the midst of a famine here. People are going through famine, families do not have access to protein, vitamins and fresh produce, and especially children who are in need of nutrients to survive. Children are showing acute signs of malnutrition. In fact, over 280 people have died of acute malnutrition. More than half of them happen to be children. There are no proteins or carbs in the food, it has no nutritional value. There's no chicken, no meat, no fish, no vegetables, no fruit or eggs. You bring me tuna, you bring me chips and you tell me to get full? We need food supplies that can rebuild our bodies. In three weeks, I lost 16 kilos and I cannot regain this weight loss eating what's in the market. We're still walking in this market street and we can't help but noticing that there is not a little access to fresh produce, vegetables and fruits and sources of protein here. Palestinians are being deprived of the nutrients to survive. And what we see here is just a little bit of fresh produce that is available for people but it's still available at a very high price. Now this is not an accident, this is a systematic policy of restricting essential goods while allowing just enough to create the illusion of access for people here. This is what I'm selling on my stool, biscuits and sugary stuff. We cannot afford the basics. There are no necessary items like vegetables and fruit. It's not available or affordable. We have no cash flow to buy it and the items are very expensive. Only looters and thieves can afford these things. In a place where famine has been officially confirmed, what you see is not aid, it's a form of control. Control over Palestinians and what they are eating.
