While people in Gaza celebrated the news of a ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes continued. Explosions interrupting an otherwise noticeable lull in fighting, but only in comparison to the relentless chaos that has defined Palestinian lives since October 2023. Still, after so much suffering, news of a possible truce is cause for hope. After two years of bombings and destructions and loss, finally they will sign the deal and sign the ceasefire. So, lots of mixed feelings, and I hope they can maintain this deal to happen. For exhausted Palestinians, the agreement is the first breakthrough in months. A possible turning point in a war-turned-genocide that has shattered Gaza for two years. To be honest, I didn't expect the negotiations to succeed because there were several rounds before they all failed. They all ended in failure, so we didn't really pay attention to this round. A lasting deal would mean a resumption of humanitarian aid, food, water, fuel and medicine, and the chance to start rebuilding. We want to go home to tend to our affairs, to check on our homes. Even though there are no more homes, we still want to go home. Throughout this conflict, Israel has often chosen war over peace. So even as people celebrate a peace plan that has been in the works for months, is backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, and brokered by powerful regional players, they know it is still only a fragile first step.
