Frida Kahlo’s face is one of the best known in art, thanks to her bold and challenging self-portraits. A lesser-seen self-depiction by the Mexican artist is going up for auction at Sotheby’s in what could be a record-setting sale.

A self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, titled 'The Dream, The Bed' and painted in 1940, is set to be auctioned by Sotheby's. The artwork, depicting Kahlo in bed surrounded by foliage and a skeleton figure, is estimated to sell for between $40 million and $60 million, with expectations that it could surpass previous auction records for both the artist and female artists overall.

Kahlo's works are rarely available at auction, as most are held in museums. This painting is the highlight of a private surrealist art collection and will be exhibited in Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and Paris before the auction in New York. The sale will also feature works by René Magritte and Salvador Dali.

Frida Kahlo lies in bed covered in leaves and seemingly in a deep sleep. A skeleton wired with dynamite and holding a bouquet of flowers lies on top of the canopy. Kahlo was bedridden for months after a serious bus accident when she was 18. She never fully recovered and struggled with pain all her life. But that was something she channeled into her art. And now this painting is set to be auctioned by Sotheby's. Well this painting is called The Dream, The Bed from 1940 and it is a self-portrait of Frida asleep in her bed. This was her bed with this canopy and she's depicted herself here surrounded by this very romantic beautiful foliage of leaves but above on the canopy is this skeleton-like corpus holding flowers but almost entwined in what looks like a kind of detonator or something. So it's a very disturbing image. It's genuinely surreal. In 2021 Kahlo's painting Diego and I sold for almost $35 million. Now Sotheby's expects The Dream to go even higher. So we've estimated this masterpiece by Frida Kahlo at $40 to $60 million. We anticipate it will set a new world auction record for the artist. It may even make a new auction record for any work by a female artist. And Frida Kahlo's works are extremely rare. They're very rare to see coming to auction, coming from private hands. Most of them are in museums and so this is an exceptional opportunity both for a major collector or indeed an institution to buy a great work by Frida Kahlo. The Kahlo painting is the highlight of a private collection of surrealist art going under the hammer. The Dream will tour to Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong and Paris before the sale in New York on November 8th. Other works include paintings by René Magritte and Salvador Dali.
