She's the first Prime Minister to visit Mayotte in over eight years. I wanted to come here with a simple message. We stand alongside the people of Mayotte. And we are working in the short term to reduce the impact of the crisis and in the medium term to keep it from happening again. Elisabeth Borne is referring to the water crisis. Due to poor infrastructure, a lack of investment and the island's worst drought since 1997, residents have access to water once every three days. Hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles are handed out as a stopgap measure, leading to another ecological crisis. The more bottles arrive on the island, the more we need to pick them up. We forget that rubbish pollutes and no one wants to live in a dirty house. In response, Borne announced the island's desalination plant will be expanded. The Prime Minister also promised measures to tackle growing violence, following a 120% spike in armed robberies in the last year and clashes between villages. But Mayotte, that's part of the Comoros archipelago and was initially purchased by a French naval officer in 1841 before officially becoming a département in 2011, has more worrying, endemic struggles. Unemployment well over four times higher than on the mainland. More than three-fourths of the population living in poverty, a third in unsanitary housing. Massive illegal immigration from the other Comoros islands that voted for independence in 1975 and have since become some of the poorest places in the world. Just one hospital for its 300,000 residents. Struggle's one 12-hour visit is unlikely to fix.
