On the eve of France’s national holiday, President Emmanuel Macron announced a €6.5 billion increase in defence spending over the next two years. One area in particular that the French army wants to play catch up in is in drone technology.

France has unveiled a €6.5 billion increase in defence spending over the next two years, with a particular emphasis on developing and mass-producing military drones. The move comes as drone technology plays an increasingly vital role in modern warfare, as seen in recent conflicts where thousands of drones are deployed daily.

French engineers are testing new systems that allow a single soldier to control multiple drones using voice commands, and the army plans to deliver 1,000 lightweight drones to combatants before the end of the year. Future plans include integrating drones with naval vessels and supersonic aircraft, and developing high-altitude solar-powered drones capable of extended surveillance missions.

France enters race to mass-produce drones

From a few grams to several tons, drones perform all kinds of functions in military operations today. They are lookouts, spies, submarines, bombers, and kamikazes. In Ukraine, this former military pilot has seen drones change the face of battlefields entirely. GENERAL-GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. GEN. These operations have a costing millions, Ukraine consumes 10-thousand kamikaze drones a day and Russia between six and eight thousand. And drone technology continues to evolve. On this test base south of Paris, engineers are performing a trial with a group of drones and training to enable a single soldier to pilot 6 devices with a very simple voice command. And the French army is ramping up its capacities. These suitcases hold lightweight drones. We consulted manufacturers, we specified our requirements and we're going to deliver one thousand drones to meet the needs of combatants before the end of the year. Other drones are being studied, for example to accompany ships and even supersonic planes. In 2033, Rafale pilots will be able to command a drone from their cockpit for the most complex missions. This will enable them to be much stealthier and to penetrate areas that we might not be able to penetrate today with an F-4, F-5 or FAL, thus reducing the risk. New drone technology will enable them almost to reach outer space. Take the Zephyr for example. It can climb to an altitude of 30 kilometers and stay there to observe troop movements. The solar panels allow it to recharge in perpetuity.
