A fragile ceasefire was holding between India and Pakistan on Monday (May 12), after hours of overnight fighting between the nuclear-armed neighbors, as U.S. President Donald Trump said he will work to provide a solution regarding Kashmir.

Tensions between India and Pakistan are rising again, with flight suspensions, blackouts and military strikes. Both sides are trading blame.

Markets have reopened and businesses have resumed operations in border towns following a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. This follows several days of intense fighting, described by some as the fiercest in nearly three decades. Local shop owners expressed relief at the return of customers but remain concerned about the potential for renewed hostilities.

The ceasefire was agreed after four days of conflict and came amid diplomatic pressure from the United States. Military sources in India reported that the night after the ceasefire agreement was the first peaceful one in recent days, though there were initial reports of violations which were communicated to Pakistan. Pakistan maintained its commitment to the ceasefire and attributed responsibility for the reported violations to India.

Despite the restoration of calm, mourning continues in affected communities. In Indian-administered Kashmir, relatives held a funeral for a soldier killed during cross-border shelling. Meanwhile, in Pakistani cities such as Lahore and Islamabad, crowds gathered to support the military and express solidarity with soldiers.

The recent escalation followed a deadly attack in Indian Kashmir, which India attributed to Pakistan. Both sides exchanged fire using missiles and drones, resulting in a combined death toll of nearly 70, according to official figures. Discussions between the military leaders of both countries have been planned as the ceasefire holds.

After four days of intense fighting, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire Saturday under U.S. pressure. The Indian army said Sunday was the first peaceful night in recent days along the border. However, it also said it flagged up some initial ceasefire violations to Islamabad. In response, Pakistan said it was committed to the ceasefire and blamed India for the violations. For some, the fragile peace was also a time for mourning. In Indian-administered Kashmir, relatives on Sunday held a funeral for their loved one, a rifleman Sunil Kumar, who was killed during cross-border shelling. Crowds in Lahore and in Islamabad on Sunday held pro-military rallies, praising the bravery of their soldiers. Tensions boiled over into conflict after India blamed Pakistan for a deadly terrorist attack in Indian Kashmir last month that killed 26 people. Both countries targeted each other's military installations with missiles and drones last week, and the combined death toll in recent skirmishes has reached nearly 70, according to official tallies. With the ceasefire holding, India said the military chiefs of both countries would discuss next steps Monday morning.
