At least four people have died while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to Britain, according to the French coastguard. French coastguard says 63 people were rescued and returned to Boulogne-sur-Mer after trying to sail to Britain.

Rescue operations led to the recovery and return of 63 individuals to Boulogne-sur-Mer. Only one of the migrants found on the boat was wearing a life jacket, while others had makeshift flotation devices like inner tubes.

The capsized boat is indicative of the poor quality vessels often used for such dangerous crossings. These boats are typically overcrowded, under-inflated, without floors, and lacking life jackets, heightening the risk of shipwreck. The English Channel, being one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, adds further danger to these crossings.

This year, at least 19 migrants have drowned in attempts to reach the UK via the Channel. The issue is both a human tragedy and a complex political problem. Newly appointed Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a shift in policy, focusing on dismantling people smuggling gangs instead of deterrence measures such as deportation to Rwanda.

However, charities argue that the root cause of this crisis is the lack of legal routes for asylum seekers. They highlight that the majority of migrants making these perilous journeys come from Afghanistan. The proposed solution by some advocates is a system of safe passage, similar to those for refugees from Ukraine and Hong Kong, providing safe, regulated immigration routes.

These emergency crews back from responding to a migrant boat capsizing, in which four people lost their lives and 56 others were rescued off the coast of northern France. Week after week, we see overcrowded boats, boats of very poor quality, because they are under-inflated, without floors, without life jackets. This morning on board the boat, there was only one migrant wearing a life jacket and a few others with inner tubes. These boats are also underpowered, which increases the risk of damage and shipwreck. And this is the journey they were attempting, across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. This walkway, the first steps on British soil for those who make it. But this year alone, at least 19 people drowned trying to reach the UK. A human tragedy, but also a political problem for successive British governments. On his first day in office, the new Prime Minister Keir Starmer scrapped the previous government's plan to deter asylum seekers by deporting them to Rwanda, instead shifting the focus on dismantling people smuggling gangs. But some fear that that will do very little to fix the issues that are the root cause of this problem. And that is a lack of enough legal routes to the UK, according to charities, who point out that the largest number of migrants in small boats come from Afghanistan. What I'd really like to see is a system of safe passage. It works well for Ukrainians who are refugees. It works well for those who come from Hong Kong. We don't see Ukrainians and Hong Kong Chinese drowning in the Channel. What will work is decriminalising the act of refugees trying to seek safety and giving them safe and regulated routes where they're screened offshore, probably in France, a visa is allocated and they are given that safe and regulated route into the country. There have already been more people crossing the English Channel this year than at this point last year. This perilous journey, a risk many are willing to take in the hope of a better future.
