A shooting at Bondi Beach in New South Wales has led to confirmed casualties and a significant emergency response. Police and medical teams have set up triage areas on the beach, and large numbers of officers, including tactical squads, are searching the area.

Eyewitnesses reported initially mistaking the gunshots for firecrackers before realizing the seriousness of the situation. The foreshore area has been cordoned off as a crime scene, and authorities are urging people to stay indoors as the investigation continues.

Yeah, look, I'll have to be honest, a lot of what we're learning is coming through slowly. As you can see, this is a significant trauma incident. There are enormous resources in this area. We know that there have been gunshots. We know that there have been casualties. The numbers we are not clear on. There have been triage areas set up on the beach. We have seen police in tears. We've seen members of the public shocked and horrified. There were people all up and down this strip for early afternoon dinner. People initially thought they heard firecrackers. It took a while for the recognition that this was a serious threat. We've seen those social clips. They look like organized people making an attack. Now, I'll take you to a couple of people who were on the sidewalk when this all unfolded. Here's a little bit of what they had to say. They heard shots. They thought it was firecrackers. And then they realized people started running. Was it hard for people to switch it into an emergency situation? Everyone's having a good time at Christmas. Did they realize what was happening? They thought it was firecrackers because it's Christmas, right? But it's too early, right? It's not dark. I'm from America. This is something I expect in America. Not here. Not here. Did it have that kind of filter? We've seen little bits of pictures. We're starting to get a picture of what's happened. Did it feel like an American-style incident? It kind of did, actually. Well, when we heard and saw all the police cars and ambulances, then we thought it's pretty serious, you know? Yeah. Now, everywhere between the metropolitan area and here at Bondi, there have been emergency services on the move, sometimes at a frantic pace. They are still calling in resources. The police helicopter is hovering above us. It has been calling out messages to people in this area to stay indoors. Police have been moving people back from that foreshore area. We know that a lot of that is now a crime scene. It's unclear which part played which role. Significant numbers of police are now combing over that foreshore area. A lot of the area focused on the grass. The area behind the surf club is the high ground. We've seen a lot of tactical squads moving around. It appears the threat is over, but this investigation is still very much unfolding. You can see the activity. This is going to be going for some time.
