Specialists at these centers note that even routine activities can trigger distressing memories for survivors, particularly when procedures resemble past torture methods. While some, like Denis, find solace in activities such as exercise and music, the journey to recovery remains ongoing and complex.

This is Denis Zalisko on his return to Ukraine in early May, after 15 months as a prisoner of war in Russia. The 21-year-old survived torture and relentless beatings during his captivity, an ordeal that nearly broke him. I had thoughts of suicide. I tried to do it, but I didn't tell my other guys about what I was doing. The rope just snapped, that's what saved me. In the weeks since his release, Denis has regained his strength at the Sovopoljana Veterans Mental Health Center, but he knows the real battle will be a much longer one. It won't stay in the past. It's with you your whole life. It won't let you forget, and you can't fool yourself. Even if you really want to forget, you can't. Like many of the veterans being treated at Lesovopoljana, Denis is prey to a constant state of hyper-vigilance, and the smallest thing can trigger traumatic memories, as the center's director explains. Any movement for them will feel like a new torture or a new confinement. It causes a certain anxiety and defensive reaction. They need to be told things in great detail here. This also applies to medical procedures, because torture is stored at the level of bodily memory. It's difficult for a person to undergo procedures that involve electrical currents, because this is the number one torture in torture chambers. Denis says working out and music have helped him clear his mind. He says his ambition now is to become a famous singer and show what Ukrainians are capable of.
