The country has gone through six presidents since 2018. Castillo and Vizcarra are expected to serve their sentences in the same prison where two other former presidents are already jailed for corruption. A former school teacher from an indigenous background, Castillo's victory in 2021 rattled traditional power structures in Peru and garnered the support of millions of poor Peruvians who championed his promise to better distribute the country's riches. Outside the prison-adjacent courtroom where he was being sentenced, some of his followers gathered to support him. This is an illegal trial and we refuse to legitimize it.
