Satish Kumar Subramanian, once a police officer, transitioned to integrated farming in his native village in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He adopted eco-friendly methods, such as cultivating his own animal feed, and gradually expanded his operations to include goats, cattle, chickens, and dogs. 

Despite initial financial difficulties and skepticism from his family, Satish found success through perseverance and innovation. He now shares his experiences with a large social media following and conducts workshops, emphasizing the importance of patience and long-term learning in agriculture.

Former cop finds purpose in integrated farming

Sometimes, when Satish Kumar Subramanian is tending to his flock of goats, he still can't believe it. Until a few years ago, he had his boyhood dream job as a police officer. But something was missing, and he decided to go self-employed and start up his own farm. After gaining some knowledge about farming, I told myself, let's quit this and start our own business. So I resigned from my job. While thinking about what to do next, I wanted to do something in my own village, and I decided to start goat farming. And specifically, integrated goat farming. The eco-friendly system involves growing his own animal feed, as opposed to having it brought in from far away. The ginjava or marvel grass he grows is rich in nutrients and at the same time a low-maintenance crop that can be harvested several times a year. His parents do what they can to support him. People usually ask whether an integrated farm can be profitable. The answer to that lies in how our life grows along with it. Starting out wasn't easy, and with the farm not generating enough money, he set up a gym in his village. But he did soon realise how male goats were particularly profitable, with no shortage of breeders eager to buy his stock. In addition to goats, he now also breeds cattle, chickens and even dogs. Beginners usually expect immediate profits, but that's where they go wrong. You can't expect instant earnings. Any business takes at least 3 years of learning and experience before it can pay off. And the former policeman has certainly succeeded in the world of social media, where he has some 140,000 followers. They are treated to insights into integrated farming practices and updates on the workshops he runs, like this recent seminar on chicken farming. His new calling is a source of pride for his parents. When Satish decided to quit and said he was taking up farming, we were shocked. Quitting a secure government job didn't go down well in the family. But now, seeing his hard work and the results, we are feeling happy for him. Satish Kumar Subramanian has found a new livelihood through integrated farming, a sustainable concept with animals and the crops for their feed both farmed right next to each other.
