An atmospheric river event that brought significant flooding threats to Washington state earlier in the week is now shifting southward. Forecasts indicate that Oregon and Northern California will face the brunt of heavy rainfall from Thursday into Friday, with 4 to 8 inches of rain expected along the coast and west-facing mountain slopes.

While flooding is likely in affected areas, river forecasts suggest only moderate flood stages, with no major or record-setting crests anticipated. The incoming system is colder, leading to increased snowfall at mountain passes, which may help reduce flooding but could worsen road conditions. Residents are advised to stay alert for flood watches and warnings.

Flooding concerns move south toward the end of the week

A significant flooding threat because of an atmospheric river event. It's how Washington state has been starting the week, but to end the week, the same concerns move South into Oregon and even Northern California. The next influx of heavy rainfall is Thursday into Friday, and Oregon is the focus. We're talking 48 inches of rain along the coast and the West facing slopes of the mountains. It's where we're most likely to see flooding issues, but once again, Creek streams, rivers. This is going to be a problem as well. Here's why it's not going to be the exact repeat of what we saw last week in Washington, but river forecasts show we get to. Moderate flood stage, not major flood stage, and we're not approaching any records when these rivers crest. So still expect flooding, just not the devastating images that we saw out of Washington last week. The system is also colder than last week, so we're looking at more snow at past level, which helps with the flooding concerns, but doesn't help with road conditions along those passes. We're talking half a foot to a little over a foot of snowfall by the end of the week. The overall message here. Stay safe, have multiple ways to receive alerts about any kind of flood watches or warnings that are issued.
