Flock Safety, a maker of automated license plate readers, has temporarily halted its pilot programs with federal agencies due to concerns over the use and oversight of the camera systems.

Flock Safety, a company specializing in camera and license plate reading systems, has announced a pause in its pilot programs with federal agencies. This decision was made out of concern for the intended use of data collected during federal investigations. The company clarified that while it does not currently have contracts with U.S. Department of Homeland Security agencies, it had previously engaged in limited pilots with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations to address issues such as human trafficking and fentanyl distribution.

Flock Safety stated that all ongoing federal pilots have been paused to allow time for review in accordance with local laws, regulations, and community norms. Local police departments, such as Liberty Police, continue to use Flock cameras to monitor crime and have control over access to the data collected. The company and its clients are working to ensure responsible use of surveillance technology.

Flock Safety cameras are in more than 4,000 communities nationwide. Liberty is one of them. We utilize them to look for stolen vehicles, suspects in criminal activity. LPD has been utilizing the cameras for the past two years and have 10 across the city. Users can input specific dates and times, vehicle make and model, and license plate numbers. He says it has played a vital role in assisting them with monitoring crime, even leading to some arrests. They're constantly monitoring intersections and areas of town where I can't put people 24-7. Yesterday, Flock Safety announced that the company has paused cooperation with federal agents. In a statement, they say, in part, while it is true that Flock does not presently have a contractual relationship with any U.S. Department of Homeland Security agencies, we have engaged in limited pilots with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security investigations to assist those agencies in combating human trafficking and fentanyl distributions. As of last week, all ongoing federal pilots have been paused. Flock says the pause allows time to work with local client laws, regulations, and community norms regarding use of data captured. LPD says they don't own their camera's data, but can grant or deny access to it. Regardless of someone's status within the country, if they're committing a crime and they're a suspect in a crime, then the tools that Flock provides provides a great resource for us to look for those people.
