Gilmore Space Technologies remains optimistic, with construction already underway on an improved Eris 1.2 rocket, aiming for another launch attempt in the near future.

First Australian-made rocket explodes on launch

With high hopes, Eris was approved for liftoff. The 23-metre rocket launched in Bowen just after 8.30 this morning. Go! Come on. Come on! But the victory was short-lived. It's hovering, it's hovering, it's hovering, it's hovering! It's gone! It only lasted 14 seconds in the sky. Oh, boom! There it goes. That's it. We got off the pad, we cleared the tower. It looks like one of our engines failed during the first bit of the flight, and then we didn't have enough thrust to keep going. The rocket exploded as it crashed to the ground, sending plumes of white smoke billowing from the wreck. Thankfully, no people were on board, just a jar of Vegemite and a camera. I believe that's the end of the Eris rocket. And even though the test flight didn't make it to orbit, the mission is still being hailed as a success. This is almost like a bit of a release mechanism for us. We finally got this one off the pad, we can keep moving forward. This launch has been a decade in the making. The space dream began on the Gold Coast, where Gilmore Space Technologies developed the rocket before transporting and piecing it together in Bowen. I think it represents the future of our region, you know? I think we've talked about how we grow new industries and support new jobs into the future. There's been setback after setback, with launch windows scrubbed due to high winds. But each attempt has drawn crowds of keen space enthusiasts from across the country. History was made right here in Bowen. We think that that will help for people to discover our little hidden gem at the top of the Whitsundays. Gilmore Space is confident they're on the right track to a future of launching small satellites into orbit across the globe. Eris 1.2 is already under construction.
