Dozens of firefighters rushed to a grass fire lapping at the edge of the Hume Highway in NSW. While no one was hurt they say it's a timely reminder as the weather warms up to ensure people have a fire plan ready.

Firefighters responded to a grass fire near Inglebourg, where flames consumed 15 hectares of paddock adjacent to the Hume Highway. Over 60 firefighters and 25 firefighting appliances were deployed to contain the blaze, which produced thick smoke affecting nearby traffic. 

Authorities noted that recent rainfall has led to significant grass growth, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread despite damp conditions. No properties were threatened during the incident, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Billowing into the sky, firefighters rushed to douse a grass fire as thick smoke blankets passing traffic near Inglebourg. Flames swallowing 15 hectares of dampened paddock at the edge of the Hume Highway. We championed some of the crews' abilities to be able to access that area. We utilised light firefighting appliances where we could to try and get containment as quick as we could on that to reduce the impact on the community. And luckily, no properties were under threat during the early afternoon blaze. We had approximately 25 firefighting appliances and over 60 firefighters on the ground battling that fire. Despite all this recent rainfall, it's had little effect on the landscape, the blackened ground indicating just how rapidly these flames can spread when fuelled by the wind. This has resulted in a significant amount of grass growth across the state. So it's a timely reminder that grass fires do happen often and in the conditions we're starting to see, they spread rapidly. So you need to be prepared. The cause is still under investigation.
