Fire officials in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, have determined that a recent apartment building fire was caused by two e-bikes with lithium-ion batteries. The fire broke out in a third-floor apartment, but all residents were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.

The incident resulted in shattered windows, substantial water damage inside the building, and affected a jewelry store located below the apartment, which now faces uncertainty regarding reopening. Firefighters managed to control the blaze within about ten minutes, and the scene has since been cleared.

Let's get right to the breaking news. I'm Noelle Lilly. Some Bensonhurst residents are picking up the pieces after a fire ripped through their building this morning. News 12's Nadia Galindo is on the scene. Nadia, you are learning this all started, possibly because of e-bikes. We've seen this happen before. Yeah, that's right, Noelle. According to the battalion chief that was here on scene, two e-bikes with lithium-ion batteries sparked this blaze. Now, fortunately, everyone was able to make it out of the building uninjured. And the scene has since been cleared, but now we're getting a look at the damage left behind. You can actually see the apartment where this fire started, and the windows are just shattered. You can see into the apartment, and that glass is now on the sidewalk below being cleaned up. We also got a peek inside the building, and there's actually substantial water damage. In fact, it looks like it's raining down the staircase. Now, there was a massive FDNY presence here on scene this morning. Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in about 10 minutes. Fire officials confirmed this all started just before 10 this morning here on a third-floor apartment at 1801 Bay Ridge Avenue at the intersection with 18th Avenue. Now, fire officials say two e-bikes with lithium-ion batteries were the cause, although it's not clear who owned those bikes. Now, residents were evacuated from the building and stood outside just looking up at the damage in disbelief, wondering whether or not their belongings were affected. I spoke to the father of one of those residents who says this could have been a lot worse. Just one more look at the apartment where this fire started. Now, I did speak to a worker at the jewelry store below the apartment. They say there is substantial water damage inside, and it's a big blow for the business because they've already been suffering with sales, and they don't know at this point how soon they're going to be able to open back up for business.
