Firefighters from the FDNY responded to a major fire at an eight-story apartment building in Highbridge, New York. The fire, which reportedly started on the ground floor and spread to the roof, resulted in the loss of the building's seventh floor. Neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from the laundry room before the flames reached the upper levels.

A resident played a key role in alerting and evacuating neighbors, with some residents unaware of the fire until she knocked on their doors. The American Red Cross is providing aid to those affected, and authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. There is no official word yet on any injuries.

to deal with it this afternoon. 12 Mike Lord has been tracking this and keeping us updated on it all. Mike, what do you say? I know well, just moments ago, the FDNY actually began to contain and put out the flame that we were seeing here on the 8th story building roof. The Fire Department telling News 12 that the 7th floor of the building was lost after 1030 this morning. Now there's no official word on how that fire began, but neighbors say they saw smoke coming from the laundry room here on the ground floor and that smoke and flame somehow made its way. To the roof where that citizen video captures the thick black smoke and large flame billowing off the side of the roof there, firefighters arriving shortly thereafter to battle the flame. Now, typically if you see a fire like this, you would come running out of a building to try and take cover to get to safety, but we're actually hearing from a neighbor now who once she saw the flame ran into the building to try and help others. Well, I was coming from the airport and I got out of her taxi and as soon as I got out of taxi there was one bit one guy in front of the building. There was no one else. And I looked up and then I just saw a lot of smoke so I quickly grabbed my phone. I called 911 and I ran into building yelling. Banged on at least 8 doors and I got all of them out. Yeah, neighbors say they're very thankful that she knocked on their door. Some of them didn't even know about the fire until she has. Luckily, people are here safe at this scene. Red American Red Cross arrived at the scene just moments ago where they're now providing aid to some of the neighbors of the building. We're still working at this hour though to learn if anyone was injured in the fire. For now, the FDNY says this remains an active investigation. We're here in Highbridge.
