Families of victims from the recent floods at Camp Mystic in Texas have testified in support of new legislation aimed at improving camp safety. The proposed Heavens 27 Camp Safety Act would require camps to implement 24-7 emergency alert systems, standardized evacuation plans, and relocate facilities away from flood-prone areas. 

Camp Mystic, which has operated in the Texas Hill Country for about a century, had cabins situated in designated floodways near the Guadalupe River. In response to the tragedy, local schools have provided therapy support for students and staff. The Senate committee has unanimously advanced the bill for consideration by the full Senate, with parents urging its passage before the next camp season.

Camp Mystic, which has been located in the Texas Hill Country for about a century, not only had cabins in flood plains, but also in a designated floodway, an area even closer to the Guadalupe River. In Kerrville, school superintendent Dr. Brent Ringo and his staff are trying to help the community return to some normalcy. I believe our classrooms are spaces for resiliency for our community and spaces of strength. In these first few days of school, they've brought in teams of therapy pets for kids and adults to just sit with. The time to heal is going to take a while. And so it's just constantly offering those supports being available because we all deal with tragedy differently. The Senate committee that listened all that testimony from parents unanimously passed that bill onto the full Senate, which is scheduled to hear it as soon as tonight, Vlad. Of course, parents are hoping that this bill gets passed before the next camp session.
