An explosion in a residential area about 20 miles north of downtown St. Louis has injured at least three people and damaged several homes. CBS News correspondent Shanelle Kaul has more.

An explosion occurred in the Old Jamestown neighborhood of North St. Louis County, Missouri, resulting in injuries to at least three people and damage to approximately 20 homes. Emergency responders, including firefighters and police, arrived to find several buildings on fire and widespread destruction, with three homes reportedly destroyed. 

Authorities, including the St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit, are investigating the cause of the explosion. The Red Cross and local emergency management are assisting affected residents, and officials warn that the number of injured may rise as more people self-report. The impact of the blast extended several blocks, causing broken windows and torn doors in homes beyond the immediate area.

We are taking you now to some breaking news out of North St. Louis County in Missouri. And you can see there the aftermath of an explosion rocked a residential neighborhood this morning. CBS News breaking news correspondent Chanel Call. Watching that situation, what happened, Chanel? Well, Reid, take a look at those images. It is so dramatic to look at. There is widespread damage on the ground and a huge radius that we're talking about here. So, Reid, we know that three people were injured in this explosion, taken to a hospital for treatment. But officials suspect that more people are injured. Some people, they say, may be self-reporting. Now, this, as you can see through this video, still a very active scene. It started shortly after 9 a.m., Reid. That is when Central County Dispatch says they got a call for a house explosion. Now, this happened in, as you can tell, a very residential neighborhood. It's called Old Jamestown. And this is about 20 miles north of downtown St. Louis. I actually wanna ask the control room to show us some images from Google Earth that we've pulled. Hopefully, we can share that with you just to get a sense of what this block looked like before the explosion. So, take a look at this. You can just look at this and really understand just how residential this neighborhood really was. Now, local dispatch, Reid, is confirming that 20 homes here were damaged. Three of them, we know, were destroyed. But there was and is a huge response from firefighters, from police, from emergency services there. In fact, one of the fire departments said that they saw five buildings on fire when they pulled up to the scene. They also said, Reid, they could actually feel the fire hall shaking when that explosion happened. Now, as for cause and next steps here, we know the St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit, they are there along with the Blackjack Fire Protection District. They are on the scene. They're gonna be there throughout the day and probably for the next several days assessing all of that damage. And also, importantly, to investigate exactly how and why this happened. Also, wanna note, Reid, that the impact of this explosion is quite large there. There are homes that have broken windows. They have doors that have been torn down blocks away from where this explosion actually started. And it's not just homes with visible damage that we're talking about. There is debris, there is smoke that's spanning several blocks there. The Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management, they are there on scene trying to help any impacted residents.
