A landslip in the New Lambton area of Newcastle, New South Wales, has resulted in the evacuation of fifteen homes after heavy rainfall triggered further ground movement. The incident, first recorded in May on Russell Road, has since expanded to affect properties across four streets, damaging homes, roads, and other infrastructure.

Residents have reported increasing cracks in buildings and roads, with some properties suffering collapse. In addition to the physical destruction, some evacuated homes have been targeted by thieves. Local councils are working with geotechnical teams to assess the situation and provide information to affected families, though officials caution that answers may not be immediate.

Fifteen homes in New Lambton and Newcastle evacuated under threat from a landslip. This home, a devastating sight after it collapsed on Saturday night. Our geotechnical services teams are still on the ground, just making sure that we fully understand as much as possible what's happening underneath the surface and where that may or may not be moving towards. The landslip was first recorded on Russell Road in May, where a number of properties on four surrounding streets were impacted and residents evacuated. Heavy rain over the last two weeks has now triggered further destruction, forcing many to leave their homes and leaving those who stayed on edge. I still most days go and check my house, look around to see if there are any cracks in the walls. Aside from homes, road and infrastructure has also been destroyed. Neighbours are saying that cracks have been popping up every few days. You can see on the road here, major cracks. A driveway's entrance has also been destroyed and the road's kerbside has even shifted. And if that wasn't enough. Some of them have been robbed and the houses trashed. These people are already dealing with quite a lot at the moment and to hear that someone has taken advantage of that, being able to go in and access their homes, just breaks my heart. As families grapple with the landslip's devastating impact, councils are working hard to provide them with answers. This is not an incident that we're going to have answers quickly and so really we just encourage community to continue to talk to us, to call me, to tell us about their issues and concerns so that we can get them information.
