England is preparing to enact legislation that will prohibit the sale of energy drinks to individuals under the age of 16. This measure builds on a voluntary ban already in place at some grocery stores and aims to extend the restriction to all retailers. 

The decision comes amid growing concerns from health professionals about the effects of high caffeine and sugar levels in energy drinks, which can disrupt sleep, increase anxiety, and impair focus in children. Doctors have also warned of risks such as dehydration and heart issues, especially when consumed before sports. The government is consulting with retailers to ensure the law is implemented effectively, with the goal of finalizing the ban by the end of the year.

Kids in England can't buy energy drinks like Red Bull or Monster in grocery stores due to a voluntary ban. Now the government plans to make it law, banning sales to under-16s everywhere. Learning from those retailers that are already doing it, about how it's working in practice so that we can expand to all retailers doing this with them rather than to them. Energy drinks often contain high levels of caffeine and sugar which can disrupt sleep, increase anxiety and impair focus in children. There's been a rapid increase in number of teenagers who consume energy drinks on a daily basis where some numbers in Ontario are now at 20 percent. Doubled in the last five years. Doctors warn kids are also chugging energy drinks before sports risking dehydration and heart trouble. If you consume too much of it like there's risk of palpitation, arrhythmias, cardiac issues. Health Canada restricts the amount of caffeine in an energy drink to 180 milligrams per serving. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in two cups of instant coffee or four and a half cans of pop. And energy drinks are required to carry cautions and state they're not recommended for those under 14. However. While the warnings can be hard to see, the marketing isn't. That's where they're always doing like crazy stuff. Like like that's like that's why why I try like I just had a sip of this. This is pretty good. A Canadian survey found 88 percent of youth 12 to 17 had seen energy drink ads. Health Canada has taken actions but at the end of the day these products are still freely available and they have relatively little information on warnings. Health Canada says it has no plans to update its policies on energy drinks. England is hoping to move ahead with its legal ban by the end of the year. Christine Birak, CBC News, Toronto.
