Oysters play a key role in marine ecosystems. In Belgium, engineers are trying to restore North Sea beds hit by overfishing, climate change and disease.

Engineers and scientists in Belgium are working to restore the European flat oyster population in the North Sea through a project known as NORA. The initiative involves breeding oysters in tanks, then transferring young oysters to artificial reefs made from clay bricks. These reefs are placed in a protected area offshore, where the oysters are expected to help rebuild natural reefs destroyed by overfishing and disease. 

The project began eight years ago and has now reached the stage where the first generation of oysters is being released into the wild. The oysters are anticipated to improve water quality and biodiversity, though experts note it may take decades for the reefs to fully recover.

Engineers help revive North Sea oysters in Belgium

The mission to save the European flat oyster starts in these tanks filled with clean seawater. The creatures get some tender loving care to help with reproduction. The idea is that their offspring should later help restore North Sea reefs destroyed by human activity. Until around the 1850, the North Sea and the European waters were full of these oyster reefs and after that, due to human activities like overfishing, another important reason was an imported parasite called Bonamia. Due to all these reasons together, the oyster reefs which were once abandoned in our waters disappeared. The project, which goes by the acronym NORA, was set up eight years ago to help European flat oysters recolonise the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast. Bell Reefs is the Belgian programme. The first generation of young oysters is now ready to start life in the wild. The larvae have settled on an artificial reef made from clay bricks and already formed small colonies. They are packed up carefully in preparation for their travels and continually irrigated so they don't dry out on their journey. We start with a number of 200,000 young oysters that we put there in the first year. According to the scientific literature, we expect that 30,000 of them will survive year one and year two and then they will start reproducing, extending the reef and also supporting the biodiversity of the reefs. Next, the young oysters are loaded onto a boat. A special vessel is going to take them 30 kilometres out to sea. One last check to make sure that the creatures are fine. Then they are deposited 30 metres down into the sea in a no-fish zone near a historic shipwreck. When they have settled in, they will make an important contribution to the health of the North Sea. A grown oyster filters almost 200 litres of water a day. Flat oyster reefs deliver a number of important ecosystem services, which is benefits. It's about these ecosystem services referred to water purification, to the oysters offering breeding and feeding ground for other marine species. That's good news for the polluted North Sea, but it will take decades for oyster reefs to become widely re-established in its waters. For more UN videos visit www.un.org
