This figure is three times more than the previous year, reflecting a growing need for psychological assistance.

Art classes in cities like Kyiv have become a medium through which teachers can gauge the emotional states of their students. Initially, children's artworks were dominated by images of tanks, planes, and bombings. However, teachers have noticed a shift towards more positive imagery, such as the sun, rainbows, and flowers. Despite this change, the emotional toll of the war is evident in children like Solomia Karenda, who still feels unsettled during air alerts. The ongoing conflict has encompassed a significant portion of her life, with her grandmother having to flee their village.

Educators, like head teacher Lyudmila Urosladseva, strive to provide comfort and stability for the students. Lessons continue in school bomb shelters during air raids, as teachers balance a sense of normalcy with the reality of the situation. Despite efforts to protect them, it remains challenging to shield children from the full extent of the war's impact. The focus on discussions about current events underscores a stark difference in childhood experiences between Ukrainian children and previous generations.



Emotional trauma weighs on Ukraine's children after years of war

Nikita Bondarenko is an elementary school student in Kyiv, Ukraine. He's in art class drawing a tank. There's a turret and cannon and two figures seated inside. He says his dad is in the military and tells him stories about it. More than 50,000 children sought professional help with mental health issues in the first nine months of 2024, three times more than the year before, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science. Some fear these emotional scars could remain even if the fighting ends soon. Art teacher Valentina Maruniak says she can trace her pupils' changing emotional state in their work. In the beginning, they used to paint mainly tanks, planes, bombings. And now, they are painting the sun, rainbows, flowers, and something beautiful. Even the soldiers said that the children are different now. And their wishes have completely changed. They want victory. They want joy. They want spring. They want joy, they want spring, they want peace. Eight-year-old Solomia Karenda painted a landscape she missed, a plain over a village in southern Ukraine. It's where she used to visit her grandmother, who fled because of the war. The invasion has spanned a third of Karenda's life. She says she still gets unsettled when home alone during air alerts. So, I usually close the door to my room and get in the bed with my toys. This makes it less scary, she says. While the air raid siren is going off, the children make their way into the school bomb shelter in the basement. There, lessons in cursive writing, art, and dance continue. Head teacher Lyudmila Urosladseva says she tries to project a sense of calm and a positive attitude. We try to protect them in some ways, but at the same time, we can't fully shield them from everything. We really talk about things that perhaps we didn't discuss with the previous generations.

The U.S. will manufacture more weapons to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia's invasion. President Trump said European nations will be footing the bill.
