But in other parts of the country, clashes broke out as soldiers tried to reopen highways. No end in sight, indigenous leaders gathered in Quito debating whether to intensify their protest. There can't be dialogue when they are repressing us, when they're attacking our people. When one of our people has been killed in Imbabura province, under these conditions there's no dialogue. This decree must be repealed before any talks can begin. At least 80 protesters have been detained, some facing terrorism charges after a presidential convoy was allegedly attacked with molotov cocktails. One indigenous leader has been killed, with reports of brutal treatment by security forces fuelling anger. On Thursday, supporters rallied outside the defence ministry to denounce the crackdown. Daniel Noboa has no strategy of dialogue or popular policy. Instead, he pursues right-wing, demagogic and repressive strategy, militarising indigenous territories and the cities, and summoning 150 social leaders to the prosecutor's office on the charges of organised crime, terrorism and illicit enrichment. President Daniel Noboa insists he will not back down. He argues cutting subsidies is essential to his economic programme and commitments to the IMF. His government has offered social compensation and transport subsidies to soften the blow. This government is trying to project the image of being firm, strong and brave. So I don't think Noboa will back down. We've seen that this is a government that doesn't engage in negotiation or dialogue, but that comes with a political cost. These protests are the biggest challenge yet for President Daniel Noboa and his hard-line approach. In the past, indigenous groups have been able to force government to make concessions or even step down. So the longer this stand-off continues, the more it threatens Noboa's authority and the stability of the country.
