After severe storms and tornadoes on July 28, severe weather is continuing across the Midwest through Wednesday.

A series of severe thunderstorms is affecting areas from Nebraska across the Midwest, bringing risks of large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. The storms are expected to peak in intensity as they move eastward, with widespread showers and thunderstorms forecast for the region. 

While some areas will experience pleasant conditions with cooler air and some wildfire smoke affecting air quality, others, especially to the south, will see continued heat with temperatures well into the nineties. Notably, parts of the northern Plains are expected to see unseasonably cool temperatures, while record highs and lows have been observed in cities such as Newark, Jacksonville, Corpus Christi, and Harlingen.

Drenching thunderstorms continue from the Plains across the Midwest

We will be watching out for an elevated risk of severe weather once again here, primarily across the state of Nebraska. Large hail damaging winds being possible here in this storm zone. We've seen storms working from west to east and looks like the storms will peak here as we head into this evening and as we head into tonight, we'll even see strong to severe storms here working the way across the I-35 metro from ST louis through Des Moines as the sun comes up here for your early Wednesday morning. So widespread showers and thunderstorms will be in the forecast here as we head into tonight. In addition to the severe threat, fortunately nothing like you're seeing on the right hand side of your screen from those storms we were tracking yesterday with that derecho, but we will be watching out for severe weather. But the overall highest potential risk that we're going to be tracking here for this evening and tonight will be for drenching thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall will persist here across this region, so that is gonna be the highest potential that we track. But overall, here's an updated look at tomorrow's forecast. We will also be watching out for an elevator risk of severe weather for your Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening here, primarily along the I-25 corridor. So from Colorado Springs all the way up through Billings, we're gonna be watching out for severe weather, large hail being the primary risk here across this zone, but also this zone here along the I-70 corridor from Denver over through Kansas City through ST louis, we will be watching out for this primary zone of flooding rainfall. So there's gonna be two areas we'll be watching out for. But overall, for your Wednesday forecast, nicer air being pulled in to the north. So some areas will actually see what we're calling pleasant conditions. It'll feel pleasant, but I will say we will see some suspended Canadian wildfire smoke being pulled in from the north, so that could deteriorate some of the air quality conditions. So keep that in mind as we head into your Wednesday afternoon. But to the south, it's all about the shower and it's all about the thunderstorm chances, severe weather in the forecast as well. And yes, temperature wise, you can see widespread seventies here being pulled across the region. So this is gonna be a mild forecast. Now to the south, it's still gonna be plenty hot. Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, ST louis, Kansas City, all these cities will see highs in the nineties, well into the nineties here for your Wednesday afternoon forecast. But yes, I mentioned it earlier, heading throughout thursday and friday across the northern plains, we're actually gonna see what we're calling unseasonably cool conditions, with some areas seeing temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below historical averages. So that's gonna be a nice little change of pace from as far south as Wichita. So right there along the Oklahoma Kansas border, we could see temperatures once again, 10 to 15 degrees below historical averages. And Jeff, that feel pretty good right about now. I agree. And Damien, it's kind of interesting to see the records, the way they break out. Sometimes when we have dry air in place, we're gonna have scorching weather in parts of texas, but we actually got to record lows this morning in Corpus Christi and Harlingen. But the northeast, the heat was sweltering 101 in Newark that broke the record from 1949 for july 29th, Jacksonville florida hit 101 that broke the record from 1875. That's a 150 year old record there in Jacksonville that broke today.
