Denver Public Schools has started a pilot program deploying weapon-detecting dogs at large events, such as football games, in response to a series of gun-related incidents at local schools. The dogs, trained to identify explosives, firearms, and related materials, are part of a broader effort to improve safety and provide a less intrusive alternative to metal detectors.

The program, which costs around $160,000, will run until the end of the first semester. Community feedback is being collected through surveys distributed at events to help determine whether the initiative should continue in future school years. So far, no weapons have been detected, but officials emphasize the program's preventative value.

Westminster police arrested a teenager who they say admitted to bringing a handgun to the Mountain Range High School campus last Friday. And then in Highlands Rance, Doug Co Sheriff's Office says accidental gunfire hit an exterior door at Rance View Middle School on Wednesday. The sheriff's office says the person responsible is cooperating. And of course, all this is happening after the tragic shooting at Evergreen High School last month. Denver Public Schools is now working on a possible solution to weapons on and near campus. Denver 7's Daniel Croyder went out with safety officers as they launch a pilot program involving four-legged crime fighters. A homecoming football game has a few extra guests this year. This is Vivian. At eight years old, she's already worked a few Super Bowls, Major League Baseball games, and now she and the rest of the dogs and handlers with K2K9 Solutions are working all large events for Denver Public Schools. They're detecting weapons from the folks coming in. Vivian is imprinted on 29 different explosive odors and firearms, gunshot residue, ammunition, that type of stuff. So she's pretty good at identifying those things just with the nose. We're always looking at ways to, um, ensure our, our, our schools, our, our events are safe and welcoming. Greg Cazell is the chief of climate and safety for While some locations like All City Stadium do have metal detectors. The metal detectors can be a little bit more intrusive to people, um, than what the dogs are. We specifically use Labradors and a few handful of German short hair pointers because they tend to be pretty friendly, pretty happy. The dogs will be in the mix until the end of the first semester as a pilot program. So far, they have not detected a weapon yet, but the safety chief says that's the point. We don't know what we have prevented from coming in. Um, so again, that is one of the benefits that we believe is there is it's proactive, preventative for handler Bob Lovelace. It's full circle. It was actually first responder to Columbine. We responded after the tragedy, and now I get the opportunity to be out here with Vivian trying to prevent that from happening in the first place in Denver. DPS says they're handing out QR codes to surveys to community members at these events to see what they think about the canines and if they'd like to see the program continued in the future school years.
