Westchester County health authorities have reported a significant increase in Legionnaires' disease cases, with at least two fatalities and 38 confirmed infections. The outbreak is primarily affecting the cities of White Plains and New Rochelle, where a high concentration of cooling towers has been identified as a potential source of the bacteria.

Testing has revealed that 17 cooling towers in New Rochelle and 15 in White Plains have tested positive for Legionella bacteria. The cases are dispersed throughout the county, making it challenging for officials to identify a single source. The county health department is actively cleaning and retesting the affected towers and has protocols in place to ensure the safety of residents.

Deadly Legionnaires' outbreak in Westchester

Westchester County health officials sounding the alarm about a rise in cases of Legionnaire's disease. They say at least two people have died. Fox 5's Richard G. Natasha, Steve, you know normally Legionnaire's outbreaks occur during those hot summer months when those cooling towers are pumping all that cold air into those high-rise apartment buildings and even though we're in September and it's milder they are dealing with multiple cases of Legionnaire's here in Westchester and at least two cities resulting as you mentioned in at least two deaths. The Westchester County Department of Health says the uptick in cases that number now at 38 is advising anyone who's expecting symptoms to seek help immediately. Those symptoms include cough, fever and chills. The Health Commissioner says these cases of Legionnaire's are predominantly in both White Plains and New Rochelle. Why? Because both of these cities have large amount of cooling towers. In fact out of the 561 cooling towers across Westchester County 141 of them are located here in White Plains. So so far 17 cooling towers have tested positive for Legionella bacteria in New Rochelle while 15 are positive in White Plains. But because most of this outbreak is so spread out it's been difficult for the Health Department to pinpoint if there is a high case count in one specific building. They have been kind of spread out over the county. We have had just a few areas where in the same zip code we've had you know at least four cases. When we get at least four cases in a same zip code we start really looking for testing, doing some testing. We've done quite a lot of testing. And following that testing now the County Health Department says they are in the process of cleaning those towers and then they'll test them again and report back to New York State. It also promises that at least the Commissioner says that they have a long-standing protocols in place with building owners to ensure the safety of residents and that they will continue to update them as needed.
