Former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire was sentenced to 10 months in jail after being found guilty of misleading the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) regarding a property sale. The court found that Maguire sought to benefit from a potential $48 million deal through a commission, but he was granted bail shortly after sentencing as his lawyers launched an appeal.

The Magistrate noted the importance of integrity in public office, despite character references from figures such as former Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack. Maguire may have already served his non-parole period by the time his appeal is heard. He is also facing a separate trial in the near future.

His lawyers immediately launching an appeal of his sentence. The guilty verdict centres around the sale of a property opposite Canterbury Hospital to a Chinese buyer. No. The court decided McGuire was seeking to benefit from a potential $48 million deal by way of a 3% commission, which would land him $720,000. Telling the truth is fundamental to our judicial system, but also to these kinds of integrity agencies where in some ways it's even more important. The Crown argued he planned his story ahead of the ICAC hearing. I never asked for a dollar, they never offered a dollar, nor would I take a dollar. Which is what he also told the former Premier, Gladys Berry Jekyllian. While she is not accused of any wrongdoing, the next ICAC investigation he appeared at effectively ended her career. In a character reference, former Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack praised McGuire as honest and hardworking, but the Magistrate ultimately decided the community is entitled to expect that those who hold high public office will conduct themselves with integrity. McGuire was in custody for less than two hours. The Magistrate decided to grant him bail, as by the time his appeal is heard, he may have already served his five months non-parole.
