This price is about half of what many patients have previously paid out of pocket. Executive members with a Costco Citibank credit card receive an additional 2% discount. The partnership with Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer, aligns with similar discounts already available through other retailers and the company's direct-to-consumer website.

Ozempic is primarily intended for adults with type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is approved for weight management in adults who are overweight or obese with certain health conditions. The U.S. FDA has also approved Wegovy for reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes in specific patients. However, there are risks and side effects, including a rare thyroid tumor risk and common issues like nausea and diarrhea. Supply shortages continue to affect availability, and patients are advised to consult their doctors before seeking these medications at Costco.

CBS News reporter Andres Gutierrez joins us live now with more on all this. Andres, what exactly is Costco doing here? Well, Elizabeth, this is a big move. Starting today, Costco members who have a valid prescription can go to one of their pharmacies and buy a one-month supply of Ozempink or Wegovy for $499. That is roughly half of what many people have been paying out of pocket. And then there's this. Costco executive members, so those who have a Costco Citibank credit card, will receive an additional 2% discount. You'll still have to have your doctor write you a prescription, but instead of having to shop around looking for a deal or worrying about those counterfeit injectable pens online, patients now have an option here at Costco. And important to note that the drug maker, Novonortis, already does sell this monthly supply for $499 at its direct-to-consumer website, and it also does offer the same discount through CVS and Walmart. So, Andres, who is this really for, and what do people need to know about the risks of getting their drugs at Costco? Well, Elizabeth, these GLP-1 drugs are not for everyone, and so here is a refresher. Rozepic is designed for adults with type 2 diabetes. It does help lower blood sugar, but it's also been shown to reduce heart and kidney problems in those patients. Wigovi is the version that is approved by the FDA for weight management, so doctors prescribe it for adults who are overweight or obese and do have conditions like high blood pressure. More recently, the FDA did give Wigovi the green light to reduce the risk of heart stroke or heart attacks in certain patients, but on the flip side, the FDA has been warning about a rare thyroid tumor risk, and this means that people with a history of thyroid cancer in their family should not take it. Some of the common side effects are things like nausea, vomiting, as well as diarrhea, especially when starting out on the medication, so people also end up developing gallbladder issues or pancreatitis, so if you are also on some diabetes medications, doctors may need to adjust those to prevent low blood sugar, so while Costco is making the price easier to get, it's still something that you'll have to manage with your doctor. And Andres, is this announcement a big breakthrough or just a small step when it comes to the accessibilities of these drugs? Well, for many folks in this economy out here, spending almost $500 a month is still a big stretch, but when you compare it to the fact that they've been paying $1,200 or $1,300 without insurance, it is a major difference. The challenge now is the supply. Right now, demand is huge and shortages have been a problem across the country, and so Costco can only hand out what's in stock, and so there is no guarantee that it will be available right when you want it, so for someone who's watching right now, the best first step is to make sure you have a conversation with your doctor, see if you qualify, get the prescription, and then see if they have it at your local Costco.
