Florencio Davila, a World War II veteran who served in the US Army's 632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, passed away recently. His family was initially informed that due to a government shutdown, he might not receive a military funeral or the honors he had earned. 

In response, the local community stepped in, helping the family connect with the Casualty Assistance Office at Fort Hood. Their efforts ensured that Davila received the military service he wished for. The family expressed gratitude for the community's support and shared memories of Davila's legacy as a soldier, father, and grandfather.

doesn't make one of those young men. This is my grandpa right here. Florencio Davila served in the US Army during World War Two, enlisting at just 18 and joining the 632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He loved his country, proud veteran, and for him to not go out without a military service. Just couldn't let it happen. But after his passing, his family was heartbroken to learn he might not receive a medal. He might not receive a military funeral due to the government shutdown. He wanted his honor to be honored for serving, you know, in the military. And when we heard that because of the government shutdown. You know, we were like we know what to do. That's when our community stepped in. It's awesome that the community can come together and believe in something and and fight for something. Neighbors helping them connect with the Casualty Assistance Office at Fort Hood who worked to make sure the service would go on while this is so important for you to make sure that this happened. It's what he wanted and he would have never stopped the family sharing a glimpse into the life of the man they call their hero. He they flew a flag over the Capitol on his birthday, September 15th. A father, grandfather and soldier whose legacy still inspires them. He was a soldier. And my grandkids. Though they're now left with memories and photos, they say his spirit will never fade. My grandpa, my grandpa is going to get his wish his final wish and and that's that's. He honored us, we're going to honor him. And let his legacy live on, and it's a legacy Florencio himself spoke about best. Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. I thought it was real nice. I'll remember it.
