While calling for more security, conservative presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot in Bogota in June. He died in hospital, Colombia's first presidential hopeful, killed in three decades. Another murder that authorities blame on armed groups involved in drug trafficking. On Saturday, ex-president Alvaro Uribe Velez paid tribute to the slain candidate. As Miguel demanded, there should be security so that in the villages, towns and cities of Colombia, people can sleep peacefully without the nightmare of waiting for violent assault. President Gustavo Petro said this week's attacks came in response to the government's crackdown on armed groups. The reaction is this, a reaction that, as you already know, ends up massively affecting the population. What we have is a massacre. Petro's defense minister called on ordinary Colombians to help authorities counter the threat. But critics say the left-wing president hasn't done enough during his term, giving the gang space to regroup and grow. During Petro's time in office, Colombian cocaine production has hit record highs, according to the UN.
