She is the first American woman to win the French Open in ten years, a feat last achieved by Serena Williams. Gauff also made history as the first woman to win her first two major titles after dropping the first set in both finals. 

Sports columnist Dan Wolken highlighted the significance of this win for Gauff, noting her growing consistency and mental strength on the court. At 21, Gauff is entering her prime years and is expected to remain a strong contender in future Grand Slam tournaments.

This win gives the Spaniard his fifth Grand Slam title at just 22 years old. Speaking of impressive young people, Coco Gauff is taking the tennis world by storm. The 21-year-old captured her first French Open women's title on Saturday and this marks her second career Grand Slam. Remember, she won the U.S. Open back in 2023 and I was there. Gauff took down world number one Irina Sabalenka. She is now the first American to win a Grand Slam on clay since Serena Williams a decade ago. Gauff is also the first woman in tennis history to win her first two major titles after losing the first set in both finals. For more, let's bring in Dan Wolkin now. He's a sports columnist for USA Today, joining us from Atlanta. Dan, good morning to you. How important of a win was this for Coco Gauff? Well, it's huge. There's a big difference between being a two-time Grand Slam champion and a one-time Slam champion. It was always going to happen for her. She's young enough and talented enough that it was only a matter of time, but it's huge for her confidence on clay. I think it's her best surface. I think that's the surface that really suits her game the most. So, to get this one out of the way, I think, is huge and her results have been a little bit up and down since she won that U.S. Open a couple years ago. But, you know, I think she's on the path to becoming more consistently in these semifinals and finals of Grand Slams. So, I think she just goes up from here. And, you know, Gauff has been a fixture in the tennis world since she was 15 years old. She's 21 now. As you mentioned, she's kind of been uneven in that she wins the U.S. Open in 23, loses in 24 at the U.S. Open against Zabalenka, and here she is now in 25 doing the opposite. Why do you think this year she's standing out? And how do you attribute, like, what do you attribute that unevenness to? Well, look, there's certainly technical things we could talk about. Her serve has kind of been an issue across the years. When it's really good, she's very tough to beat, but she can hit a lot of double faults. Her forehand technique can kind of go off kilter, but she's a real fighter out on the court and a great athlete, mentally very, very strong in these kinds of moments. So, I think when she can get to the latter stages of a Grand Slam, it doesn't matter who she's playing against, Zabalenka, Svantek, whomever, she is going to make it a tough match and have it give herself a chance to come out on top, which is exactly what she did in this French Open. But she doesn't really necessarily have the game to dominate week in and week out on the tour, but she has been, I think, growing in her consistency. And I think she's just getting older, 21.
