Keyes raced out to an early lead in the first set, but Gough, who lost in the finals at the French Open three years ago, looked much more assured in the second, breaking Keyes twice to put herself in front. Both Americans battling through mistakes, though, the pair combining for more than a hundred unforced errors and just 40 winners over the course of a little over two hours. Keyes fighting back to level the score late in the second set before Gough broke once more and held serve to tie it at one set apiece. And then Gough found her stride in the deciding third, looking much more comfortable to close out the match. She said afterwards, there's a lot of work still to be done, but that she'll savor this one.
