The remnants of Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda are still causing rough waters off the East Coast. At least seven coastal homes have collapsed into the ocean off North Carolina and there are concerns others may fall as well.

A series of unoccupied homes along the Outer Banks in Buxton, North Carolina, collapsed into the ocean after being struck by large waves generated by the remnants of hurricanes Umberto and Imelda. Within a short period, five homes were destroyed, followed by two more, as rough surf and high tides continued to threaten the area. 

Local officials expressed concern that the situation could worsen with more storms expected, while scientists attribute the increased frequency and intensity of such events to climate change and rising ocean levels. The ongoing destruction has raised questions about the future of coastal development in the region, with debris from the collapsed homes piling up along the beach.

Umberto and Imelda are hurricanes no more, but their remnants are still making waters off the East Coast dangerous. Those waters have knocked down coastal homes in North Carolina, and there's concern others may fall as well. Skyler Henry is on the scene tonight. These homes along the outer banks were no match for massive waves fueled by two powerful hurricanes churning far off the coast. I'm just shocked. Can't imagine this happens anywhere else. Five collapses within like one hour. Five unoccupied homes were reduced to piles of splintered wood within 45 minutes on Tuesday as rough surf measuring 8 to 12 ft pounded the community of Buxton. Two more houses fell after that. And then today this happened. These structures are falling at breakneck speed. Just in the last hour, this house collapsed because of the high tide. City leaders say that because of oncoming storms, it may get much worse. Robert Woodard is the chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners. You can see today this is two days after the storm and you look at this ocean. It's a monster out there. We witnessed it ourselves while trying to set up for our interviews. Yeah, in the last five years, nearly two dozen homes have been destroyed. Scientists blame it on climate change, which they say is causing more intense storms and a rise in ocean levels. Why even bother keep building this thing back? Our beaches are our economic engine. They're critical to the success of what we have down here on this island and we need to protect it. Mhm. And as the debris continues to pile up on the beach, this green structure behind me is getting slammed, making it a matter of when, not if it will collapse into the Atlantic Ocean.
