China has responded to President Trump's threat of a 100% tariff by vowing to implement countermeasures. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that recent US restrictions and sanctions have harmed China's interests, prompting Beijing to defend its new limits on rare earth exports. 

China's Commerce Ministry indicated that it would take 'corresponding measures' in response to the US tariff threat. While China emphasized that its rare earth export curbs do not amount to a full ban, the controls now extend to foreign companies overseas and impact a wide range of industries, including defense, automotive, robotics, and semiconductors.

Our Eunice Yoon is on the ground in Beijing with more on the Chinese response. Eunice. Thanks, Sarah. Well, after eliciting a strong response from President Trump, the Chinese are defending their new restrictions on rare earth exports. Today, the Foreign Ministry said the U.S. has continuously introduced a series of restrictions and sanctions against China, which have severely harmed China's interests. China firmly opposes this. So, in other words, from China's perspective, Beijing is only matching Washington's policy. The Chinese are also threatening to retaliate against President Trump's 100 percent tariff threat over the weekend. The Commerce Ministry pledged to take, quote, corresponding measures. Now, at the same time, the Chinese appear to be looking for ways to try to mitigate some of the negative response, for example, saying that the curbs do not equate, they say, to a ban. Just as a reminder, China's rare earths controls now have been expanded to cover foreign companies that are overseas. And also Chinese rare earths are in a broad range of industries, defense to big autos, such as — or big industries such as autos, and then cutting-edge technologies that include robotics and semiconductors.
