Celebrations have taken place in the Gaza Strip and Israel as hopes rise for an end to the two-year conflict. However, both sides remain cautious as several aspects of the agreement, including the timetable for Israeli withdrawal and the future governance of Gaza, are yet to be finalized.

Plumes of smoke rose across parts of the Gaza Strip on Thursday as Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a US-proposed peace plan. The new deal would see Hamas free the remaining hostages in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Israeli troops would also start a partial pullback from Gaza. Even before the deal has been ratified by the Israeli parliament, celebrations got underway in the Gaza Strip as the hope of an end to the two-year war came into sight. Today, there's an incredible happiness spreading among all the Palestinian people because of our joy over the truce, the ceasefire. Hopefully God will see our happiness through and God willing the ceasefire will hold forever. The war will not return and we will live safely and in peace. There was also relief in Israel where the country has waited two years for the hostages to be released. Of the 251 taken, 20 survivors are still being held. We woke up to a very hopeful morning, happy morning. We hope all the hostages to come back as soon as possible. We thank President Trump and our brave soldiers. Despite the relief, people on both sides are still cautious. Many details of the plan still have to be agreed, including the timetable for Israeli withdrawal and the future government of Gaza. The deal comes days after the second anniversary of the Hamas attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people.
