The pipeline, which would run from Alberta to Nebraska, has previously been rejected by past US administrations but is supported by Donald Trump and Alberta's premier.

Despite progress in areas such as steel, aluminum, and energy, significant obstacles remain for Keystone XL. Canadian conservatives argue that current environmental regulations would need to be repealed for the project to proceed, and there is uncertainty over whether a private company would take on the project, as the previous proponent has only recently reconsidered its position.

A source also says in the White House meeting, Carney brought up the prospect of reviving the Keystone XL pipeline, a pitch that appeals to Alberta's premier. We've talked to all the players who are potentially going to be able to partner to make that happen and I'm pleased to see that it's elevated. Keystone XL would run from Alberta to Nebraska. Previous proposals were rejected by Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But Donald Trump wants to bring it back, posting on Truth Social in February that he wants to get it built now. Is there really a willingness on the part of Mark Carney to make, I think, fundamental adjustments to Canadian climate policy? Conservatives say for a new pipeline to work, liberals would have to repeal their own environmental regulations. Getting Keystone XL built is one part of the problem, but a production cap preventing new oil and gas development here in Canada won't do us any good. It doesn't matter if you can build a pipeline and put it in the ground if you can't put anything through it. There's also the question of whether a private company would want to move ahead with Keystone XL.
