A Toyota SUV topping global hybrid sales charts has been gutted after it spontaneously burst into flames at a driveway. The blaze engulfed the vehicle before then spreading to a second one and destroying part of a home.

A fire broke out in Smithfield, NSW, engulfing a Toyota RAV4 hybrid and spreading to a work van and a family home. The incident occurred in the early hours, prompting neighbours to use garden hoses to protect their properties before emergency services arrived. The family inside the home escaped safely.

Initial suspicions pointed to a possible arson attack, but fire investigators later determined that the fire likely started due to an electrical fault in the vehicle's wiring. Toyota Australia has stated it will investigate the incident further. The affected family expressed relief at having insurance and gratitude that no one was injured.

The burn patterns are indicating an area of original heavy fire activity in and around wiring looms and compartments in the front left hand side of the vehicle. That vehicle just one year old, the world's best selling car, now withered from the 800 degree heat. A Toyota Australia spokesperson says it takes safety very seriously and the team will make contact with the customer to find out more about the circumstances of this incident. Fortunately I have insurance for the house, for the car. I don't know what I, slowly I'm going to figure out what's going to come back to business. Olivia Blunden, 10 News.
