This move is part of a broader effort to revitalize Sydney's nightlife and entertainment sectors, which have not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, partly due to ongoing cost of living pressures.

In addition to easing venue restrictions, the government has made it easier to stage outdoor events such as gigs, festivals, and theatre performances by removing the requirement for a development application. However, other regulations, including liquor licensing, fire safety, and landholder consent, still apply. The changes are intended to support the recovery of Sydney's hospitality and entertainment industries.

Obviously, the cost of living crisis has been an impact for that. It's not just pubs and clubs getting a boost. Staging outdoor events will also be easier. Gigs, festivals and theatre performances will no longer need a development application. It's not game on to do whatever you like. You still need to seek landholders' consent at the very least. Other rules still apply, including liquor licences and fire regulations. Events must also not begin before midday.
