The group, which also included delegates from the National Council of Canadian Muslims, planned to visit Jerusalem and the West Bank to meet with displaced Palestinians and discuss settler violence.

Israeli border officials reportedly asked the delegation to sign forms acknowledging they could be threats to public safety, which the group refused. No official reason for the denial has been provided. A similar Canadian parliamentary group was allowed entry in the previous year, marking a notable change in policy. CBC News is seeking comment from Israeli authorities.

We have some breaking news this hour. CBC News has learned that a delegation of Canadian parliamentarians has been denied entry into Israel this morning after trying to enter by land from Jordan. The group of five MPs were expected to spend three days in Israel and the occupied West Bank to visit displaced Palestinians. Rafi Boudikhanian is in our Jerusalem bureau tracking the latest for us this morning. Rafi, what do we know about what happened here? Marian, we'll be learning in bits and pieces exactly what's come down, I suspect. But what I can tell you for now is that, yes, these MPs were expected to be in Jerusalem by now. It's early afternoon here and they were supposed to spend some time in the Old City today and then tomorrow and Thursday they were supposed to go to the West Bank. The goal of the trip was to meet with displaced Palestinians, speak to them about settler violence. However, what we've learned is that in the last hour they were detained at the border. Now, I have spoken to a spokesperson for the National Council of Canadian Muslims, which does have delegates in this group, part of the non-MP section of the delegation. She said they were asked to sign these forms by border control which says that they all acknowledge they could be threats to public safety, which they find outrageous. They refused to sign and were therefore declined entry. I will note that before the trip started I did speak to a couple of the MPs. There is a total of six of them, five Liberals and one NDP member. I spoke to one of the Liberals and the NDP MP and they had differing opinions on whether or not this could happen. Liberal MP Samir Zubairi telling me that he didn't really foresee a problem with them getting in because they're Canadian parliamentarians. NDP's Jenny Kwan saying that she did think this was a possibility. She thought it could happen because of the deteriorating relationship between Canada and Israel over the last couple of years with Canada recognizing a Palestinian state and so on. Now, I will say we have no official reason for why they have been denied entry. Last year, a similar group, again, Liberal and NDP MPs, were able to get in. They were not the same MPs who tried to get in this time and they were able last year to go to the West Bank and meet with displaced Palestinians and then return to Canada without any incident so this is really quite a stark difference from what happened in January 2024. Yesterday, I happened to ask the Israeli government spokesperson for them what they make of this Canadian group coming to Israel and going to the West Bank. At the time, I was told they had no information to share on this. They had no comment. We are, of course, trying to get updated comment from them now as to what exactly has transpired.
