Many young Cameroonians are caught between hope for meaningful change and frustration over persistent economic difficulties, including challenges in finding stable employment despite an official youth unemployment rate of 6.23%.

Analysts suggest that if young voters mobilise in large numbers and demand transparent election results, they could play a decisive role in shaping the country's future. Incumbent President Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982 and is seeking re-election at the age of 93, remains a central figure in the political landscape.

With just a few weeks to go before the presidential election in October, Cameroon's youth find themselves at a crossroads. The country's young people represent more than 60% of the population that are torn between hope for real change and frustration over their daily economic struggles. We are just hoping that things get better because the situation of the country is getting tough by the day and we are hoping that whoever wins the election should see into the situation, the problems the citizens are facing. So that's just all the reason why we want to vote. Despite an official youth unemployment rate of 6.23% in 2024, countless young Cameroonians struggle to find stable work. For many, something has to change politically. My generation, young people born in the 90s and the early 2000s are no more passionate. We are at the elastic limit of patience to live under the leadership of one person. So I think that we are going to cast the vote of hope come 12 October 2025. For some analysts, young voters represent a decisive force. If they mobilise massively and demand transparent results, they could end decades of single-party rule. Many youths are not yet up to the level of coordinated actions that is independent of politics. And unless they learn from other countries, they cannot have such mobilisations that are on the ground. We had even just Nigeria next door, ENSAS, which led to something very big. Cameroonians will cast their ballot on October 12. Incumbent President Paul Biya said in July he would seek re-election. At 93 years old, he has been in power since 1982.
