Minnesota is experiencing heightened demands for new gun safety legislation following several high-profile shootings, including the Annunciation Church and School incident and the assassination of Melissa and Mark Hortman. Governor Tim Walz is expected to announce a special session focused on addressing gun violence, with state legislators set to gather input and testimony on potential measures.

Despite increased advocacy from pediatricians, city officials, and victims' families, political polarization persists, making bipartisan agreement on gun control measures challenging. While some lawmakers are open to enhancing school security and mental health resources, evidence supporting bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines is also being discussed.

Calls for new gun safety laws in Minnesota

When the coming days, Governor Tim Walz is expected to announce a special session to address gun violence. It was initially in response to the Annunciation Church and School mass shooting two weeks ago. Fox 9's Corrin Haugard is live at the Capitol right now. And so, Corrin, since Annunciation, we've had the death of Charlie Kirk and a shooting at a Colorado high school. So does that make any kind of political agreement any more likely in this session? Yeah, you know, we also had the assassination of the Hortmans just three months ago. And now we are hearing some louder calls for new gun safety laws today. We heard it from Minnesota pediatricians and the Minneapolis City Council. But here at the Capitol, these opposing parties seem more firmly entrenched than ever on opposing polls. Gun violence prevention is a loan on the agenda for state legislators next week. Our goal on Monday is to take testimony, get input, get ideas. The Gun Violence Prevention Working Group is designed to cook up ideas for laws that could avoid a repeat of June 14th, when a gunman assassinated Melissa and Mark Hortman and shot Senator John Hoffman's family as well. And August 27th, when a shooter killed two children and injured 21 other people at Annunciation Church and School. The Annunciation massacre doesn't convince people that assault weapons don't belong on our streets. I'm not sure what will. In the words of several Annunciation parents and the victims' doctors, political action on gun safety is a must. But on just this one issue of gun violence, I hope it would get through their skulls, that message. But I will settle for nothing less. But political analyst David Schultz says the parties are more polarized now than in 1994, when Congress approved a 10-year assault weapons ban, with votes across the aisle. Bipartisan agreements on major new gun control did not come in 2012, when 20 kids and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook. And Schultz says they're nearly impossible now. Since then, we've had school shootings, we've had nightclub shootings, we've had what we've had here. Violence isn't driving us to the peace table. It seems to be driving us further apart, if anything. And Republicans here are telling me that they're focused on beefing up school security and mental health treatment. Senator Lass says he's willing to work on those things, too. But there's evidence that banning assault weapons in high-capacity magazines can actually save some lives.
