The first significant storm system of the season will bring rain to much of the state of California and snow to the Sierra. Rain will move into Northern California and the Central Coast Monday.

California is currently under flood watches stretching from the central coastline through Los Angeles, Orange County, and down to San Diego. In higher elevations, winter alerts have been issued from the Cascades to the Sierra, with the first major snowstorm of the season anticipated in areas such as Mammoth, Tahoe, and June Mountain.

Rainfall totals could reach 3 to 5 inches in regions like the San Gabriel Mountains, which is significant for this area. The precipitation is expected to continue over the next couple of days, driven by an onshore flow from the Pacific. Severe weather threats have also been highlighted for areas including San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Long Beach.

I know it's super early there and even down towards San Diego and then up in the high country. We've got winter alerts already set up here from the Cascades down into the Sierra. Now for rainfall, San Gabriel's could be seeing a lot of rain. 3 to 5 inches with one storm is a lot. OK, especially for this part of the country. This is now through Thursday, so everything developing today and really hanging out with us with what we call an onshore flow from the Pacific kind of moving across these mountains and helping to bring in and squeeze out more precipitation. You take a look at the severe threat. OK, Storm Prediction Center has this area highlighted. You know San Luis Obispo. Anybody going to college up there? Santa Barbara? Same thing you see Santa Barbara and that of course will continue into tomorrow. Notice Long Beach is in the game as we work our way into the next 24 hours. 24 to 48 hours.
