Organisers are calling for donations from the public after a budget shortfall has put beloved art festival 'Sculpture by the Sea' at risk.

The event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and artists from around the world, has not received federal funding this year, despite having received approximately half a million dollars in previous years. Organisers have already cancelled the Perth edition earlier in the year and are now seeking public donations to keep the Sydney event running. If they can raise $100,000, a limited version of the show will go ahead, while double that amount would allow for the full exhibition.

But overnight hopes were dashed when artists were told the show might not go on. Absolutely devastating. 450,000 people come to Sculpture by the Sea, artists from all around the world, but we are $200,000 short of budget. Organisers today made a desperate plea for public donations after missing out on federal assistance. We have some wonderful corporate and philanthropic supporters, pretty good support from the state government in New South Wales, but a big fat zero from the federal government. In 2022-23 organisers received around half a million dollars in federal funding for the Sydney event, but when that wasn't matched for this year, they knew they were headed for the financial cliff. Forced to cancel the Perth event earlier this year for Sydney's next month, artists have already given their all. Emotional investment, financial investment, stress management and time. It takes up most of the year. They called me and they said you're in the show. I was crying and laughing and my son was like, have you won the lotto? What's now a global stage started 28 years ago with some volunteers working out of David Handley's lounge room. Sculpture by the Sea began in 1997, sorry got a bit choked up then, but last year's exhibition brought 56 million dollars in direct spending into the New South Wales economy. If donations hit 100,000 a limited show will proceed, double that and the full seaside gallery opens next month. Ali Donaldson, 10 News.
