A judge on Wednesday (July 23) sentenced Bryan Kohberger to four life sentences without the possibility of parole after he pleaded guilty to the murders of four University of Idaho students in 2022.

He pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. During the sentencing, family and friends of the victims delivered emotional impact statements, reflecting on their loss and the lasting impact of the crime. 

The father of one victim expressed dissatisfaction with the plea agreement, wishing the case had gone to trial to address lingering questions and conspiracy theories. Law enforcement announced plans to release police reports from the investigation, and clarified there was no evidence linking Kohberger to certain online accounts or a second weapon. Prosecutors remain skeptical about any future statements from Kohberger.

I remand the defendant to the custody of the Idaho State Board of Corrections for to be imprisoned in an appropriate facility in execution of the sentence where he will remain until he dies. A judge in Boise, Idaho has handed down four consecutive life sentences to Brian Koberger for the murders of four University of Idaho students in November of 2022. Koberger had pleaded guilty earlier this month to the four charges of first degree murder as well as one count of burglary. Victim impact statements were read by family and friends of those who were killed. Emily Allant read a statement on behalf of her friend, Bethany Fonku, a roommate of all four of the victims at the time of their deaths. She discussed her horror of sleeping through the killings. CBS News- If I had known, I of course would have called 911 right away. I still carry so much regret and guilt for not knowing what had happened and not calling right away. Even though I understand it wouldn't have changed anything, not even if the paramedics had been right outside the door. I hope that they are remembered for who they are and not what happened to them because who they are were so beautiful and they deserve to be remembered in the highest way. CBS News reporter Andres Gutierrez is outside the courthouse in Boise, been covering the story all day. Andres, what can you tell us about the reaction following that sentencing? Well, Jerica, the most visceral testimony during today's sentencing came from the family of Kaylee Gonzalvez. Her father speaking to the press right after the hearing out here and said that he felt like this plea agreement had been very vocally opposed against it, described it as a shortcut. He wishes that this case would have gone to trial next month. It would have cleared up some conspiracy theories. Also pointed out this, that we had not heard previously, that apparently his daughter Kaylee was stabbed 30 times that night, November 13th, 2022, and called Brian Kober a coward, something that was said in the courtroom by not only him, but as well as the judge and some in the gallery as this was all underway. And then eventually law enforcement from Latha County went ahead and held a news conference as well. The Moscow Police Department said that they will be posting all the police reports for this investigation online later this afternoon because if you may remember, they did place a gag order shortly after Kober was arrested to preserve the integrity of this case. Investigators do say that they believe that there was a reason as to why he chose 1122 King Road on that night, but they still do not know the why that everyone is trying to figure out. Right now, they also point out that there is no connection to that Papa Roger social media account because in the aftermath, there were a lot of people who were essentially online sleuths, and there was this Facebook group that had been created, and there was one person who was essentially asking these questions that were very eerie to what someone like Kober could have possibly been asking. When asked about a second weapon, investigators say all the evidence shows that Kober did use a Ka-Bar knife for the four murders, and Bill Thompson, the lead prosecutor, says that he does not think that anything that would come out of Kober's mouth, whether it be a trial or if he ever speaks to the media or decides to perhaps write a book in the future, would be the truth.
