It's still the height of summer, but excitement is already building for the upcoming ski season, now less than 90 days away.

Brian Head Resort in southern Utah is preparing to open for the 2025-2026 ski season, targeting an early opening date and aiming to be the first ski area in Utah to welcome skiers. The resort has invested $1.4 million in capital improvements, focusing on enhanced snowmaking capabilities, particularly on Navajo Mountain, to facilitate an earlier start and potentially extend the season.

Last year, Brian Head set a record with 181 operating days and hopes to surpass this with a projected 184 days for the upcoming season. The resort, which sits at the highest elevation in Utah, believes its location and upgrades will help achieve its goals. Ski tourism continues to be a significant economic driver for the state, contributing over $2.5 billion last year.

But when you catch a look at the general manager for Brian Head all decked out in his ski gear, maybe you'll catch the bug. I couldn't resist the temptation to put on my jacket and helmet goggles and just imagine what it feels like to slide on the snow, to welcome people here to Brian Head for our projected opening of November 7th. I'm so stoked. That's General Manager Tom Pettigrew from Brian Head Ski Resort in Southern Utah already counting down the days to the 2025-2026 ski season. We set a record for 181 operating days last year. I think it's really important to remember that Brian Head is actually, from an elevation standpoint, the highest resort in Utah. Our base area is over 9,600 feet and our summit is 11,000 and that just brings really, really favorable snowmaking conditions. The resort invested 1.4 million dollars into capital improvements for this coming season and hope guests will love the upgrades that include more snowmaking like to Navajo Mountain, which they say enables them to facilitate that earlier opening day and they hope to run clear through May 10th. I think that adds up to 184 days of operation, you know, and that's if we can go longer at the end, we will. If we can start out earlier, we will too. It's the resort's fourth year with this earlier opening day, confident they say that they can do it. You'll remember last year it was Solitude who beat them out opening just a little sooner, but Brian Head boasts they got their continuous operations going sooner than any other resort. Just a little friendly competition as that excitement grows, even in the heart of summer for this next ski season. And you know, all that white stuff yields to a lot of green.
