The three judges said the 70-year politician was also guilty of leading a criminal organization that had sought to plunge the country back into dictatorship. That's going to tell us more about Bolsonaro's sentencing and the reaction to it on the ground. I want to go now to Maurizio Savarese. Maurizio, thank you for your time. Maurizio is a reporter with the Associated Press, joining us from Brazil's capital, Brasilia. Maurizio, Bolsonaro has been under investigation for years, of course, so we know this. Is there anything about the case that has come as a surprise? Not really. All the votes were as expected. There's some surprise with the fourth vote being against, sorry, one of the votes being fully against the decisions of the rapporteur of the case, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who did a sprawling investigation. It was a bit of a surprise. Everyone expected a sort of a new, five new votes in the Supreme Court panel. The reactions from the defense are expected. I mean, he's going to try to appeal so he doesn't have to go to a prison in Brasilia and he remains in house arrest. So we're still, we still have some decisions to be made in the next few weeks. We don't expect him to go to a prison any time in the next couple of weeks or so. So there's, it's pretty much going according to the expected. Still though, a pretty dramatic possibility here that he'd be going to prison. You're in Brazil's capital right now. What's the public reaction been like? Well, I don't know if you could hear, but there was a party very close to where I am now. There's a lot of people who are celebrating. Of course, there's people who are upset that some of them are really close to the home of the former president, praying and hoping that some reversal of sorts would come towards him. I would say that the splits, according to recent polls, is about 60% of Brazilians being favorable to his arrest, to his prison time, and the other 40% either against it or leaning against it. So it's a, it's a divided country for sure. And we're going to see whether the next few weeks are going to make that more dramatic as, as the process fully finishes with, with his prison time. Mauricio, weighing in on all of this is the U.S. president, Donald Trump. He's called the conviction, quote, very bad for Brazil as a country. What do you think he means by that? And how does that affect the, the divide as you describe it in, in your country? Well, Brazil is the only country that got a letter from President Trump saying that this, the tariff that he's imposing unilaterally have something to do with something that is not about the economy. It's about the Bolsonaro trials. He's already used the Magitsky Act against some of the judges in this panel. And we are expecting, according, well, at least that's what we heard from diplomats and people in government, some more sanctions to come, but for possibly not economic, it could be something about more Magitsky Act decisions regarding other justices of the court or even people who work with them, staffers of the court. We'll see how that goes. The American government has been sort of unpredictable in many situations, and this is one of them as well. Mauricio, why do you, why is President Trump so invested in this? Well, because President Bolsonaro is in his camp. He's a far-right president that has governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022, always inspired in what Trump did in the United States. He was labeled Trump of the tropics for a while. One of his sons, Eduardo Bolsonaro, a lawmaker in Brazil, is now in the U.S. also pushing for more sanctions against the Brazilian government. Of course, Brazilian government is responding by saying, this is our sovereignty. And it's also about the Supreme Court having its jurisprudence, which doesn't have anything to do with the Brazilian executive. So at least as of now, it doesn't look like the tug of war is going to end, that Brazil's government is going to waver in any way, and it doesn't look like the American government is going to change any perception about the tariffs or how it feels the Brazilian administration is treating former President Bolsonaro.
