A shooting occurred near a Hanukkah event at Bondi, New South Wales, leading to the deaths of 10 people. The Bondi Pavilion, where a bar mitzvah was taking place, was placed in lockdown for several hours as attendees initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks.

Many people inside the Pavilion and in the surrounding area were left in shock, with some only learning the severity of the incident through text messages. The community continues to gather near the site, awaiting further information from police and coming to terms with the tragedy.

Chris we've spoken to some incredibly brave people and families here today who were at Bondi celebrating as we know that Hanukkah event. I've also just spoken to a number of people who have been now let out excuse me of the Bondi Pavilion. Now the Bondi Pavilion is right next to the park where this Hanukkah event was taking place. Now inside the Bondi Pavilion today there was a bar mitzvah event taking place. Now when these shots started firing a lot of people told me they thought being indoors that perhaps there were fireworks outside. They were of course gravely mistaken that Bondi Pavilion was placed into lockdown. So all of those families have been inside for a number of hours. A lot of them very unsure about exactly what had transpired outside. Now a few of them have just been only in the last few minutes allowed to leave and go home. They've just also now been faced with the news that 10 people have died here today and I spoke to a few of them as they were let out of Bondi Pavilion a short time ago. Here is what they had to say. All of a sudden we heard something that sounded like firecrackers. That's what I thought at first and then people just started to run panicked out of their minds. How are you feeling knowing that you know we've got multiple people dead here today? How's that how's that sitting with you right now? I am numb. To be honest quite shocked. Somebody just told me there's multiple dead. I am absolutely gobsmacked. In all my time in this country I never ever thought I would see that day. Right here at such an iconic place Bondi. Just insane. We didn't know what was going on. It took a while before we could find out. So it was text messages from friends that told me there were shooters going on and we still don't know exactly what's happened. So yeah I guess we'll find out a bit later on. Numb is exactly how I think a lot of people are feeling down here tonight. Plenty of people here still unsure exactly what to make of all of this. There's a number of people not far from me that are still covered in blood. They don't want to go home. They don't want to leave the beach. They're actually just completely in shock and don't know what to do with themselves quite yet. Very much everyone is very eager to hear from police which we're expecting shortly to find out more about this tragic event here today. But certainly the community here tonight still gathering on the corner here of Campbell Parade and Beach Road just across the road from the bridge where we've all seen that harrowing footage from earlier in the evening. As I said earlier, a number of people still just in the last couple of minutes being able to evacuate from Bondi Pavilion and still coming to terms with all of the devastation that's occurred here.
