Yayi's announcement follows speculation about his potential candidacy, despite Benin's constitution prohibiting former presidents from serving more than two terms. The ruling party has nominated finance minister Rumiud Wadani to succeed outgoing president Patrice Talon, amid concerns about possible constitutional changes. Benin is set to hold its next presidential election in April 2026.
